The story so far...

Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) specialised in promoting the protection of fauna and flora in the Lower Zambezi National Park (LZNP) and in the surrounding Game Management Areas (GMA). The organisation was jointly established and registered under the Zambia Societies Act in 1995, by conservationists, safari tour operators and stakeholders within the LZNP and Chiawa GMA in an effort to supplement and compliment ZAWA. CLZ is governed by a Constitution and an annually elected Board. An elected Executive Committee oversees day to day operations whereas matters of policy are dealt with by the Board.

Initially funded by safari operators, local stakeholders and Humba Bush Foundation, CLZ provided limited logistical support to NPWS wildlife scouts. CLZ had no base from which to work and had only one paid employee. However in about 1999 the Danish Ambassador Mr. Mads Sandau, after a visit to the Lower Zambezi, took a keen interest in CLZ and the area. In a short period he availed funds to secure a small base in the Valley from where CLZ could operate, two vehicles, an aircraft, a communications network and operating capital which funded fuel, rations, maintenance and day to day anti poaching operations.

During the period of transition from NPWS to ZAWA, poaching countrywide increased massively.  However CLZ supported anti-poaching operations very effectively, keeping poaching to a minimum in the Lower Zambezi.  As well as providing transport (road, air and river) and other logistical support to ZAWA anti poaching activities, CLZ has saved numerous animals, particularly wild dogs, lions and elephants, by darting them to remove potentially lethal wire snares.

The Danish funding for anti-poaching expired in 2002. The Royal Danish Embassy (RDE) offered to support the construction of an Environmental Education Centre and to procure transport, equipment and supplies necessary for the same. At the time CLZ was operating on land owned by a safari lodge and it was decided, given the high level of investment, that CLZ would be best served if the investment was made into land it owned.  A new Base Camp and Education Centre were constructed and officially opened in October 2005 by the First Lady of Zambia.

The opening of the Education Centre proved to be a critical moment for CLZ. It had taken on a greater role in conservation in Zambia and accepted a wider remit in educating the youth and communities in the benefits of preserving the natural environment for their own sakes and improved livelihoods.
